|A long time Howard County resident, Jim Selfridge is owner and president of James H. Selfridge Builders, Inc., one of the area's leading custom home builders, specializing in southern style design. Jim founded Selfridge Builders in 1991 and attributes his success in part to running the company by his personal creed: Do what's right when no one is looking.
Jim's career in the construction industry actually began nearly a decade prior to founding Selfridge Builders. After a successful college career as quarterback for the Green Terror, Jim graduated from Western Maryland College in 1982 and went to work for Travcon, Inc., a construction management firm specializing in the development of Jiffy Lube franchises throughout the U.S.
By 1984 Jim knew he wanted to strike out on his own and founded JHS Construction, a general contracting company. Forty JHS employees worked in five states on a variety of projects from apartment rehabilitation to a 60,000 square foot office redesign. By 1990, Jim's interest in custom residential home construction was piqued and he decided to change the direction of his company.
In 1991, James H. Selfridge Builders, Inc. was born. A family owned and operated business, Selfridge Builders has completed more than 200 custom homes to date, including several developments for which the company managed all aspects of land acquisition, planning and development, subdivision processing, and home sales. Selfridge is currently developing 10-12 lots per year, all in Howard County, and some of which are for repeat clients.
Selfridge understands that there's far more to satisfying its clients than simply building comfortable homes. That's why great effort has gone into retaining a highly professional and experienced staff. To both reward employees and ensure its clients are always working with the best in the field, the company offers an employee ownership plan whereby eligible employees share in 50 percent of the company's profits. The team's combined 90+ year's tenure is a great testament to the kind of company Selfridge is.
The secret to Selfridge's success: The company holds itself to higher standards than those generally accepted by the industry. A member of both The National Association of Home Builders and The Home Builders Association of Maryland, Selfridge Builders is one of the area's most respected and sought after custom home builders.
